Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade delayed

I’ve had today’s date in my calendar for a couple of months. Checking forums and the Internet regularly to make sure everything is still on track. Today, the bad news: Fujitsu-Siemens have delayed the release of the Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for the Pocket LOOX 720 until January 2006 :-( There’s nothing wrong with the current OS – just the anticipation of something new, I guess…

World Atlas 2.0 for Pocket PC

Dreamsoft’s World Atlas 2.0 is an application that, at first glance, promises a lot. World Atlas provides world maps on PocketPC devices, which is something that appeals not only to travellers. It is very disappointing when one discovers how limited the functionality of this application is. As a first criticism, the trial version provides a limited list of countries the user may choose from. The list of countries comprises the first few countries beginning with the letter A – not exactly useful to the large PocketPC community in Northern Europe. I doubt there are many PocketPC users in Algeria, for example! It is possible to manually pan and move around the map to find the required country, of course. A more relevant selection of countries would seem sensible to me. When selected, a graphical image of the country is displayed. Nothing fancy at all. In fact, any power user could easily download required maps in bitmap format from various sources without incurring any cost. There is no further functionality other than being able to pan and move around the image of the world map. There is no search function for capital cities, rivers or places of interest, to name only a few possible features the map could include. In my opinion, this application is far off the mark. For someone who is interested in having geographical information on a handheld device, I suggest the slightly more expensive, yet infinitely more powerful Pocket Earth by Blue Point Studios. World Atlas scores a low 3/10 in my book. It’s just not worth the 2MB download and certainly not worth USD 14 (about ZAR 90). Decide for yourself – download the trial version from Handango. You’ll need to have the latest version of the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework installed on your device.

Acquisitions

Skype has just been bought by Ebay and Oracle has announced plans to integrate Siebel into its product offering. I don’t quite see how a VOIP company can make Ebay more profitable or permit it to offer better service. Surely there are already many different messaging and VOIP technologies in use by Ebay customers.

Vodaworld Techno Expo 2005

Techno Expo 2005 The Vodaworld Techno Expo, held at Vodaworld in Midrand, provided an opportunity for the public to see some of the latest and soon to be released mobile handsets. Unfortunately, very little chance at touchy-feely! All the cool new stuff is stuck behind perspex. Hence, there is little chance to get an idea of actual size and weight. Of interest: the Motorola PEBL and RAZR. My personal favourite is the new, orange Sony Ericsson Walkman phone, the W800i. Leaf Wireless had the new HTC JASJAR on their stand. A good chance that this cool gadget will be available here soon. Running Windows Mobile 5, GPRS, full QWERTY keyboard, etc. Just depends what the price will be.

New iPod and new iTunes

iTunes Apple have released iTunes 5. It features a slicker interface, better search and support for the new iTunes-enabled mobile phones. Also, the iPod nano will be available shortly. Colour screen, wafer thin, capacity for about 1000 songs. Very nice! Now, about that gadget budget…

Fuel price increase

Fuel gauge Like 99% of all South Africans, we filled our cars up prior to the R0.29 fuel increase last night. A liter of motion lotion will now set us back R5.91. Katrina hasn’t helped, nor have the Chinese. It looks like a further increase may be on the cards for October. Maybe it’s time to start cycling again.
