Resco Explorer 2007

If there’s one application I can’t do without on my JAMin, it’s a decent file manager. The standard File Explorer on Windows Mobile is usable, but anything more than a copy and paste reaches the limits of that application. For a long time, I’ve relied on Resco’s Explorer. They have just released the updated Resco Explorer 2007.

To be honest, nothing much has changed. As with many updated releases of popular software titles for the Windows Mobile platform, highlights generally exist beneath the exterior. The same look and feel is still there, but with a couple of useful enhancements.

The only real change I could initially detect was the addition of some information in the status bar, below the file listings. That provides at-a-glance information relating to used storage space and files sizes. And that’s really it. Resco Explorer 2007 performs file decryption in memory and features a quick search bar that may be useful. File types highlighting allows one to distinguish file types more easily.

As I don’t use the Today screen plug-in, enhancements to that component are of little interest. The Today screen plug-in features a task manager, which is not a bad feature to have access to, unless you’re already running a special application for that. I rely on Omega’s Battery Pack Pro.

The only other hidden feature that should improve stability and overall usability is a change to the way network settings are handled. Those affect the operation of shared and mapped drives and the ftp plug-in.

If you’ve purchased a copy of Resco Explorer less than a year ago, you qualify for a free upgrade. It’s worthwhile, simply because a new version is available, but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary. If you’re looking for a reliable file manager, Resco Explorer is a great utility to have. Other than that, the new version is exactly exciting. Then again, what would one expect from a file manager?

Agree completely about the usefulness of this program. Because the interface has remained very similar, I think you’ll only pick up the other improvements as you go along. I was fortunate enought to have paid an upgrade fee of $12 for one of their multi-packs lately, so I scored a major upgrade on their Photo Viewer app (also very good) and this one for almost next to nothing. Money well spent, in any event.

BTW, any news on HTC devices that you might or might not be testing in the near future?

  • I was able to get the latest release due to my having purchased less than a year ago. I agree – it’s a good purchase.

HTC promised a lot and hasn’t quite delivered yet, though I have had a sneak peek at one or two new devices. I’m still waiting to get a couple for longer term testing…just goes to show: don’t make promises until there’s some certainty ;-)
