Xee, it’s like IrfanView

If there’s one application I miss on both the Mac and Linux, it has to be IrfanView. I use IrfanView on a daily basis and have become accustomed to cropping and rotating images using the handy utility that has been around for as long as I can remember. For Windows, there is no better lightweight image manipulation tool.

On Leopard, I struggled to find something that could replace the functionality of IrfanView. Preview is ok, but doesn’t quite provide the functionality I need. Eventually, I found something that isn’t quite IrfanView, but is very close. The free application goes by the name Xee and makes my image manipulations on Leopard far more streamlined and comfortable.

Xee is able to display images of various formats, is able to crop and losslessly rotate. That’s sort of what I’m after. Unlike IrfanView, cropping is still slightly cumbersome, but other than that, I’m quite happy with it. The download is extremely small (a ZIP file of 1.3MB) and installation is a no-brainer: drag the executable to the Applications folder and get editing. I’ve made it the default application to open images with.

Try it and Xee whether you like it too ;-)

  • Marthinus:

Since I bought Directory Opus I have abandoned IrfanView, but in my pre-Opus days IrfanView was also my tool of choice to quickly manipulate images.

  • Never heard of Directory Opus – a rather lofty title ;-) I’ll check it out…
