B&H Photo order arrived

It’s taken just over a week for my B&H order to ship from New York.

USD 82 for shipping, ZAR 519 for customs. Amazingly, the combined cost is still cheaper than anywhere in South Africa.

I’ve seen what the local distributor charges retail stores for the products I ordered. Needless to say, there’s a mark-up of at least 50% by the time Joe consumer buys in-store.

Apple and Canon products aren’t the only ones affected, but are the ones I’ve had the most frustration with. See these online rants at the price variances: MPieters.com and apple(mac)geek. I’m certain there are plenty more and the companies involved couldn’t give a damn…

There would be a lot more business done if we could only trust the safety of our ordered equipment in the hands of the SA Post Office!

I’ve been ordering a lot of stuff online, from B&H to Amazon, as well s eBay auctions. I’ve had nothing go missing – with regard to the B&H orders, these are shipping using UPS or similar. Hence, there’s no chance that anything won’t arrive or cannot be tracked. I have a lot of confidence ordering from B&H (and others) this way.
