Update

It’s been an interesting few days, so I’ll give you a brief update. From today, I’ve been requested to provide content for a new blog that many of you may already have visited.

NerdBoys

The NerdBoys are proudly Durban, proudly South African and proudly gadget. We are not your average nerds – think maple floors, New York chic. We hope to change the way you view technology…

I’m not proudly Durban, though I like the place – I’m situated somewhat further north. Certainly proudly gadget and certainly proudly South African. I’d like to think of myself more of a geek than a nerd, but that’s academic ;-) Anyway, I’m flattered to have been asked to contribute and will hopefully provide some articles and items that will be worthy. With time being an issue, you may see me posting the same stories here from time to time.

Do me a favour as a loyal reader: visit both sites, just in case ;-)

And then, I was surprised to have someone following me on Twitter, though I haven’t experimented with that for months. Tyler Reed‘s blog is on my list of must-read, so again I’m quite taken by the fact that he would take the time to build community. He’s also prompted me to dust off the Twitter cobwebs and contribute to that fascinating social web phenomenon. Click here to follow me. Why not? And follow Tyler too ;-)

Two time-zones for ZA?

The fact that we have an energy crisis in ZA is making a lot of people very creative in a very short time. The latest is the possibility of ZA being divided up into two time-zones. That means you’d have to set your watch backward or forward by an hour or two at specific times during the year, mirroring the behaviour most other inhabitants of planet earth have become accustomed to. Phoning Cape Town or Durban from Johannesburg an hour or two too early would elicit the same behaviour as at present: no answer or someone on the other end, half asleep…

Timezones

Not a bad idea, though I can’t see how this would necessarily help with the issue of shifting demand for electricity. Eight hours would certainly make a difference, but two hours would have a minimal impact in my opinion. In any case, citizens of ZA are more than happy to adjust to high crime levels, poor service delivery and inept politicians. Changing our waking patterns based on a new time-zone should be a doddle…

More flight hours per dayAnd, an investment opportunity beckons: buy airline stocks now, because with an introduction of an additional time-zone, aircraft could fly a lot longer each day.

I wasn’t aware that we were creating 26 hour days…eish!

Planet of the apes

Digital PlanetI don’t like to get medieval, unless I’m convinced that I’ve exhausted all avenues. My latest experience with Digital Planet has left me fuming, frustrated and certain that I’ll never purchase anything from them again.

This rant has nothing to do with the fact that the telephonic placing of an order for a Creative ZEN over the telephone was unpleasant. It has nothing to do with the fact that, even after explaining numerous times that the ZEN I wanted was the latest one, 4GB with SD card slot as featured in the February edition of SACM, they still got it wrong and presented a different unit upon collection. My rant also has little to do with the fact that they apologized for their mistake and immediately issued a credit voucher. Said credit voucher to be internally converted to a reversal of the charge for the unwanted item on my credit card. So, it has nothing to do with all these things. My rant has to do with the fact that it’s taken a month, and I’ve only now heard that the money will be refunded. That wouldn’t even be so bad if I had left them to their own devices. Instead, I followed-up telephonically at least four times, each time having to listen to their voice prompt indicating that phone calls are recorded for my protection. On at least one occasion I provided banking details and was assured that the refund would be completed immediately. Of course, nothing happened. One friendly reminder to the boss@digitalplanet.co.za seems never to have been read. My ALL UPPERCASE, SHOUTING AND RANTING email of 07:00 this morning still hasn’t returned a read receipt. And the assurance of a refund at 14:00 this afternoon has resulted in a call about fifteen minutes ago indicating their apology that there had been some miscommunication and that I would find a reversal of the charge on my credit card statement.

This leads me to a number of conclusions: the backoffice at this organization is severely disorganized. Even worse, they have a propensity to promise things, but never follow-up or deliver. Worse still, they lie. Contact details may as well not be provided on the website, as no one seems interested in reading, let alone responding to any correspondence. The net result is that I won’t utilize their service. I recommend you consider your choice of vendor carefully, too. We keep quiet far too often as consumers, letting shoddy service harm only ourselves and never the organization intent on providing it.

Mapping

If you have a chance, get to the Chief Directorate of Surveys and Mapping in Cape Town. Mowbray, in Rhodes Avenue, to be precise. Or visit them on the web. For just ZAR 210, I acquired a set of ten DVD‘s containing raster and vector maps of the entire country in scales of 1:50000 and 1:250000. A nice resource to have. The maps remind me of those I spent a significant time studying and measuring in high school geography!

CD:SM map sample

The CD:SM also supplies various aerial photographs spanning through history and laminated maps in many different versions and scales. If you have an interest in mapping, this might be for you. You may order online, too. For a government department, the CD:SM is highly efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. A personal visit is an experience, especially if you have the time to browse through their archives.

Spectacle spectacle

Though no gadget in the true sense of the word, my new glasses are certainly technologically advanced. A titanium frame by the French company Minima and plastic lenses, probably made by China.Inc. Anti-scratch, anti-glare, anti-everything-else-the-optometrist-can-get-you-to-pay-for.

Spectacles

First observation: for someone as blind as a bat, these things do the one thing they are supposed to: bring everything into sharp focus. Second observation: the frame is super-flexible and should withstand the rigours of daily wear and tear, including the odd wrestling match with the three year old. Third and most amazing observation: the whole lot, frame, lenses and all weighs only 12g!

SA Blog Awards 2008

It’s that time of year again, when I humbly request your vote in the SA Blog Awards nominations. This time for the year 2008. Even better would be more than one vote and the dissemination of this here URL to friends, family, enemies and pets with the intention for them to do the same. The more the merrier and, truth be told, I’m not fussy ;-)

Voting this year runs from 11th February through to 14th March, and the winners will be announced at the final awards ceremony on 3rd April. Last year, I made it to the final round. Help me out to get at least as far this year. I believe it unnecessary to pull a Hilary or an Obama on you, the voting public. Instead, I rely on your good nature and your ability to click the button on the top right of this page or below.
